Who is Foster Supports?

Foster Supports is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, run by volunteers living in Jefferson County, Washington. Our belief is that children in dependency are a community responsibility. When the state removes a child’s parent as their primary guardian they become the responsibility of all of us. The old language referred to these children as wards of the state; we now call them dependents. But we all know that states can’t care for kids. People do.

This We Believe

Foster Supports believes that all people caring for community kids, dependents of the state, deserve respect and special care. We believe that these caregivers will be more successful in parenting the dependent child if we support them as a family unit. Families are unique and their needs are likewise. Children in dependency live with aunts and uncles, friends of the family and grandparents. They also live with people they have never met, who have opened up their home and lives to fostering. We recognize that to be of real service, we have to ask each family caring for a dependent child directly what they need and how best we can help them get it.

Everyone can absolutely help a child living in dependency in real and tangible ways. How we will rise to the challenge will be unique to our skills. Whether housecleaning, dropping off a dozen cookies or a hot meal, mowing a lawn, paying for a specialist or takeout, we all have a way we can pitch in.  Programs don’t change lives; people and relationships do. Join us in making a different kind of system.
